Beyond Blackface

Beyond Blackface grew out of the author’s fascination with the brilliant blackface vaudeville comedian and historical figure, Bert Williams. The collection surveys the extraordinary contributions and impact of African Americans to the emergence of American mass culture during the early twentieth century through a compilation of essays by musicologists, drama historians, literary specialists, and historians.

“This thoughtful collection of essays, edited by W. Fitzhugh Brundage, urges the reconsideration of African American representational politics.” – Lauren Rebecca Sklaroff, The American Historical Review
